NXP Semiconductors has developed a solution to connect its High Voltage Battery Management System (HVBMS) via its S32G GoldBox Vehicle Network Reference Design to the cloud to leverage an artificial intelligence (AI) powered battery digital twin. Using Electra Vehicles, Inc. EVE-Ai 360 Adaptive Controls technology, NXP unleashes the power of digital twin models in the cloud to better predict and control physical BMS in real time, to improve battery performance, battery health status up to 12% and enable multiple new applications, such as electric vehicle fleet management. NXP will demonstrate the solution at this year’s electronica at Munich.

why is it important

While batteries continue to be the costliest part of an electric vehicle (EV), AI-powered digital twin cloud services have great potential to improve state of health (SOH) estimates and battery state of charge (SOC) for improved efficiency, life and cost. The battery digital twins adapt to continuous changes in battery health due to operating conditions and provide updated numbers to the BMS to continuously improve control decisions.

Automakers can use the technology to provide driver information, such as range and speed recommendations. In addition, adaptive battery control can improve battery performance and safely extend battery life, thereby reducing warranty costs for the automaker. Another potential application is electric vehicle fleet management, providing fleet operators with invaluable usage information, such as vehicle charging times and predictive battery diagnostics. Battery service centers can also use this detailed information to reduce downtime through rapid diagnostics, and EV charging station operators can effectively optimize their charging service and energy efficiency.

As the market for electric vehicles grows, the supply of second-life batteries will also increase. Although they have reached the end of their “automotive life”, these batteries have a significant residual capacity of up to 80%. Harnessing this remaining battery useful life (RUL) in energy storage systems (ESS) for homes has the potential to reduce homeowners’ energy bills.

The AI-powered battery-powered digital twin solution with Electra Vehicles, Inc. offers a performance advantage through high-precision sensors, real-time closed-loop control of the BMS, and network connectivity combined with predictive algorithms. The solution includes three elements. NXP’s S32K3-based HVBMS reference design, which offers high precision and accuracy to safely extend battery life. Having accurate measurements of battery SOH and SOC harnesses the full potential of the battery and thus maximizes range with accurate diagnostics.

The second element is NXP’s S32G-based vehicle network processing solutions. NXP GoldBox delivers secure high-performance computing and real-time network performance with secure cloud connectivity for cloud-based and data-driven automotive services. NXP collaborates with Electra Vehicles, Inc.a leader in AI-based on-board battery controls, data analysis and design, for the third and final element of the digital twin solution, which is to implement its adaptive digital twin EVE-Ai and connect its electrification solutions seamlessly to the cloud.

Electra’s EVE-Ai architecture processes data to identify cycles (time series) and extracts characteristics at the battery and vehicle level. The adaptive cell modeling system technology then dynamically selects the most appropriate model for a specific usage profile.
