SPIE announces the 2023 Prism Awards finalists

The annual awards celebrate the best in photonics innovation in areas such as lasers, biomedical devices, augmented and virtual reality, and quantum.

PITTSFIELD, Mass., Nov. 15, 2022 — Breakthrough technologies and companies ranging from exciting, emerging startups to longtime industry stalwarts are among this year’s finalists for the SPIE Prism Awards. The 24 companies, divided into eight categories, will be honored during a gala evening on February 1, 2023 at SPIE Photonics West. The annual event, which recognizes industrial innovation in photonics, will also celebrate its 15th anniversary. As part of the 2023 Prism Awards, SPIE, the international optics and photonics company, received 76 entries from 19 countries.

Dynamic Technology Areas encompassing augmented and virtual reality hardware, quantum, healthcare and lasers showcase the range and variety of this year’s entries and finalists. New companies such as Dotphoton, QuiX Quantum, Magic Leap and Philophos will share the gala stage alongside previous Prism champions including 4D Technology, EKSPLA, Norlase, Kyocera SLD Laser and NKT Photonics. Fifteen years later, the Prism Awards continue to recognize and honor the best optical and photonic products and technical innovations brought to market.

“The 2023 Prism Award finalists represent the most innovative technologies and developments in the optics and photonics industry,” said Kent Rochford, CEO of SPIE. “The scientists, engineers and companies bringing these exciting products to market are impacting our daily lives and our future prospects in transformative ways, whether they are working on healthcare, augmented and virtual reality, quantum technologies or one of the other categories. I’m very much looking forward to congratulating all of our nominees — as well as recognizing the winners, of course — at our 15th Annual In-Person Gala at Photonics West in February.

“The Prism Awards are the preeminent international competition for showcasing photonics innovations around the world,” said Tom Laurin, President and CEO of Photonics Media. “We are proud to once again present this year’s finalists, a mix of household names and dynamic startups, whose innovations advance the fields of quantum, AR/VR, as well as familiar categories that include cameras and imaging, lasers, sensors, and test and measurement. We wish all the finalists good luck as we look forward to the gala on February 1 when the winners are announced.
