Attendees of the 2022 International Defense Exhibition and Seminar (IDEADS-22) showed strong interest in the Frontier Works Organization (FWO) ‘One Network’ project on the second day of the mega event at the Expo Center from Karachi on Wednesday.
The “One Network” is an advanced communications project, under which 3,000 kilometers of underground fiber optic cable is being laid along highways across Pakistan. After the completion of the project, it would meet the telecommunication requirements of Pakistan.
According to the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of One Network, 2,000 kilometers of fiber optic cable have been laid under the highways communication infrastructure. People traveling on highways would be relieved from peak situations. It would also eliminate cash payments at toll booths.
The system would also be linked to highway police to monitor any violation of traffic rules, such as wearing seatbelts and speed limits. Also, in an emergency, people would get timely recovery or rescue assistance.
The ‘One Network’ covers the M1 to M16 highways in Islamabad, Peshawar, Lahore, Pindi Bhattian, Multan, Sukkur, Karachi, Hyderabad, Sialkot, Dera Ismail Khan, Swat and Hazara, in addition to the Lahore ring road and the Lahore-Faisalabad road.
The FWO also organizes six diploma courses. According to the director of this project, Col (Retired) Atif, about 45 short courses lasting three to six months were also offered. Graduates from here were associated with technical fields in Pakistan and other countries.
Meanwhile, at a seminar titled “Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the Defense Market: A Paradigm Shift in Military Strategy and National Security” as part of IDEAS-22, experts in artificial intelligence (AI) highlighted the critical role of universities in keeping Pakistan abreast of advancements in this field.
The seminar was organized by the Institute of Policy Studies (IPS) Islamabad and the Defense Export Promotion Organization (DEPO), where Defense Production Minister Israr Tareen was the chief guest, said indicated a press release published here.
Addressing the seminar, Tareen acknowledged the country’s progress in the industrial and defense sectors, driven by AI and machine learning (ML). He also highlighted the role of academia, researchers and data savvy people in the development process.
“Pakistan can become a global hub for AI, data science, cloud native computing, edge computing, blockchain, augmented reality and IoT by reshaping and revolutionizing the world. education, business and research through the adoption of advanced technologies and AI-driven applications,” he said.
He pointed out that the country’s talented youth should have opportunities in the field of AI and the fourth industrial revolution. [Industry 4.0] through initiatives such as the Presidential Initiative for Artificial Intelligence and Computing (PIAIC).
“Besides social, political and economic changes, advanced technologies, 5G and AI have also changed the whole dynamics of contemporary warfare, battlefields, tactics and strategies,” the minister told attendees. .
“With such strategic shifts, the concept of security has expanded beyond conventional terms and rudimentary procedures to include sophisticated mechanisms and technology-driven procedures. These pose new challenges for states,” he said.
IPS President Khalid Rahman, who delivered the opening remarks, emphasized the role of human intellect and research in the development process. “In this regard, universities have served as key platforms to set the pace for humanity in key areas,” he said.
“AI progress will not stop and no country should be left behind in AI development,” he stressed. The role in the progress of AI is essentially played by universities, where research, creativity and collaboration… can not only capitalize on the potential of AI, but also meet the challenges.
To address the complex new security challenges of the 21st century, the other speakers presented their research, insights and findings on different AI-based applications and processes, upon which future international security dynamics depend.
Lt-Colonel Dr Ghulam Murtaza, Dr Yasar Ayaz, Dr Muhammad Tayab Ali, Maj Aon Safdar, Dr Waleed Bin Shahid, Lt-Col Usman Zia and Sqn-Ldr Javeria Farooq also spoke during the seminar. The session was followed by a panel discussion.
