“Ransomware remains the most devastating threat we are currently observing,” said Candid Wuest, vice president of cyber protection research at Acronis.
NCR: Hello everyone. Welcome to the Acronis #CyberFit Summit here in Miami. I’m Diana Blass with CRN. Human error continues to be a major cause of cyberattacks, and ransomware damages are expected to reach $30 billion in 2023. Here, to shed some light on this research and tools to prevent these attacks, the Candid West of Acronis.
Candid Wuest, Vice President, Cyber Protection Research: Ransomware is still the most devastating threat we see right now. And of course that means that if you’re unprotected, or just say “I have backups”, that might not be enough because you need to know how fast can I restore my backups, isn’t it not? If it takes four days, you have backups, but that might not be good for your business. And of course, a lot of ransomware now steals data, leading to data leaks, data breaches, that’s why we also launched our data loss prevention product at this summit.
NCR: Acronis Advanced DLP is fully integrated with Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud. It extends the platform’s cybersecurity capabilities by preventing data leaks when data is shared between users and moves between systems. Typically, DLP is an expensive solution to deploy because it requires upfront work to define sensitive information and then formulate detection rules. Acronis’ integrated approach has minimized this work for MSPs, many of whom have already seen the benefits of a consolidated platform.
Cramer Snuggs, [founder] of Cascade Technology says its customers have not experienced a breach in 365 days thanks to Acronis. Thanks for join us.
Cramer Snuggs: Absolutely.
NCR: And quite impressive.
Snuggs: Thanks. Thanks.
NCR: So what is it about Acronis solutions that has really prevented your customers from dealing with large-scale breaches?
Snuggs: I think it’s more about the single pane of glass that we keep talking about, where all of our solutions communicate with each other. Thus our antivirus and our active protections communicate with our backup and our disaster recovery platform. So I think the global reach of the Acronis platform and the number of different features we have have greatly reduced the risk we see today.
NCR: To underscore the value of a platform approach to cybersecurity, Acronis discussed research at its #CyberFit Summit on the Wallet of People Under Attack.
West: We conducted a survey and asked how many security solutions companies used in parallel, and 22% of respondents used more than 10 security solutions in parallel. So you have multiple vendors, multiple invoices, probably training for employees as well. So many things you need to do. And the attackers, they just need one of those mistakes and they’re in.
NCR: And they are ready to take advantage of it.
Bryan Grayeck, Director, Information, Cybersecurity, REDW: All the companies we’ve spoken to that have been hacked or hacked, lose between $60,000, $80,000 to $100,000 or more, $1 million. It is not unusual for a hacker to demand payment of $1 million in Bitcoin before releasing the information.
NCR: Finally, as we look at the massive amount of funding Acronis is currently receiving from investors and innovating with a number of patents, how will the technology continue to evolve? What trends will Acronis really invest in?
West: Oh, we have different threat patterns that we’re looking at. And of course also different avenues, Internet of Things, beyond cyber, there are so many devices coming in the next few years that need to be protected. And on the other hand, of course, there is still a long way to go to be faster on the Internet, allowing you to restore your business in just hours, not days. So we’re looking at all these different things, and some of them might be coming next year, some of them might be five years short, but we want to be able to protect the things that you want to protect over the next five years .
